“Generative AI (Gen AI) was something I first discovered in 2011. When I suggested that the Founders of Diligent join me to create Arria NLG, we knew that the future of machines generating intelligent language was a huge step forward for humanity.

Fast forward to mid-2024 and we see the largest companies by Market Cap and many of the fastest growing are powered by the Gen AI revolution.

These newer breeds of Gen AI use massive processing power (NVIDIA chips) and Large Language Models (LLMs) with Generative Pre-Trained Transformers (GPT) and Neural Network architecture.

As I saw this Consumer AI explosion (with OpenAI generating $3.4bn in about 18 months and NVIDIA becoming the most valuable company in the world), all I could think about was the lack of accuracy.

With our company Arria NLG we wouldn't have formed it or valued its contribution to humanity if its version of Gen AI (Natural Language Generation or NLG) had so much inaccuracy in the outputs.

I first came into contact with Boards and the Secretariat in 2007 when I introduced Diligent to the UK and EMEA.

You can't have a wrong page number in a board pack. An erroneous pixel is too much to bear at times. The stakes are different on boards. Few people get exposure to the boards of the largest companies on the planet.

I've been a director of a UK public company and I understand how Gen AI must look to board members today.

Yet there is a way. I am pleased to say.

AI ushered into the Secretariat is a mere extension of the work over the last 15 years introducing the board portal.  However it is more complex.

We're here to empower the Secretariat to lead the board with a gradual adoption of AI.

We are convinced this will help the Board make better decisions around AI, once they have a chance to see it in use around them and learn to appreciate its complexity and power within Enterprise.

NVIDIA chips are being bought up by data centres globally to "prepare" for the large use of AI.

We suggest the Secretariat takes a close look at its first use of AI in much the same way: "prepare" now.
